Why is it on Long Island not in Long Island?

Long Island contains the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, and the counties of Suffolk and Nassau. So you would say “I live in the county of Suffolk on Long Island”. Saying “I live on the county of Suffolk in Long Island” would sound very odd. It’s probably due to the fact that “Long Island” contains the word “island”.

Why is Long Island not on Long Island?

These are two different places. Therefore the name ‘Long Island City’ can be confusing – because the name suggests that it’s a suburban community outside of New York City’s boundaries. The name suggests that it’s situated within the region of Long Island. But this is incorrect – Long Island City is in Queens.
