In 2018, Ascension Health, a national nonprofit healthcare network based in Missouri, announced it would be closing Providence Hospital, a large nonprofit hospital it owned in the District. Providence, located in Ward 5, was the District’s longest continuously operating hospital.

Why did Providence Hospital in DC close?

The hospital’s planned shutdown had caused significant pushback over fears of gaps in care, but Providence leaders said declining patient volume and revenue showed less need for a full-service hospital campus. In March, the District dropped a lawsuit it had filed in December over Providence’s closure plans.
