How old is Newport?

Newport was created after the Normans conquered Gwent in 1093. In the early 12th century they built a castle by a ford in the River Usk. Soon a little town grew up by the castle. In the Middle Ages towns often appeared by castles as the garrisons provided a ready market for the townspeople’s goods.

Newport News was named for Christopher Newport, captain of the Susan Constant, the lead ship of the 3-ship fleet that carried the Jamestown settlers to the New World in 1607.The place where that occurred became known for Newport’s good news, “Newport’s News,” and eventually just Newport News.
