Oak Bluffs – A great white shark has recently been located off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard.Beachgoers should be mindful of sharks when entering the water this summer. Though they do not actively hunt humans, encounters with sharks can be dangerous for both humans and sharks.

This includes the entire stretch of the beautiful yet shark-infested cape cod national seashore. and don’t think you’re safe elsewhere on the cape — if it’s salt water, it’s shark territory. Sharks swim off the beaches of Nantucket sound as well as Cape Cod Bay. The chance of an encounter is much lower though.

Are there sharks in Vineyard Sound?

There are places in Massachusetts — Nantucket Sound, Vineyard Sound, Buzzards Bay, and as you move west and north along the Massachusetts shoreline — where there’s very few great white sharks, so virtually all of those areas have low densities and are absolutely safe to go swimming in deep water.
