Is it safe in East London?

On the whole, London is a safe city to visit. According to the Economist’s Safe Cities Index, London is the fourteenth safest city in the world. Visiting East London poses no greater risk to tourists than visiting other parts of the city.

The East London borough of Hackney is the fifth most dangerous borough in London according to Metropolitan Police data from January and February. The borough saw 4,140 reported crimes in that time frame. Violence against the person was the most common crime with over 1,000 incidents reported in just two months.

Leyton is OK. It did have a bit of a rough reputation, years ago, but is much better now. You still need your “Street smarts” though, and it is still, perhaps, not an area that I would wander, alone, late at night….

Though generally safe, it’s not a good idea to walk around London at night, especially on your own. Quite aside from the safety factor, it’s also a major capital city – if most journeys take upwards of an hour via public transport, just imagine how long they’ll take on foot.

Soweto is a safe place to visit for a day tour but with conditions. Don’t venture into the city on your own and go to areas that aren’t safe if you’re unfamiliar with the city and follow all the usual tourist rips to keep safe and avoid falling victim to a crime.
