You can not use American dollars in Venice, or anywhere in Europe, just as Euros can not be used here. If you take US dollars to an exchange office you’ll probably be charged around 20% (including fees). There are numerous ATM’s, Italian banks will not charge for withdrawals your bank will make the charge.
