In urban Austria, not just Vienna, you can actually live without German. But if you decide to move to a “rural” Austria, you can get in trouble. Austria is not the same as the Netherlands or Scandinavic countries, where everyone young and old can speak good English.

Can you get by speaking English in Austria?

The short answer is that English is very widely taught and spoken in Austria, with around three quarters of the population being able to converse in English to some level. Therefore you should have no problems using English in Austria, especially in larger cities like Vienna and tourist destinations.

Most Austrian universities require that you know German, as many study programmes (especially Bachelors) are — at least partially — taught in German. For English-taught degrees, you must be a proficient English speaker.For example, if you did your Bachelor’s in Humanities, you cannot go for a Master’s in Business.
