Do Australians get enough exercise?

A World Health Organisation study has found Australia ranks just 97th in the world when it comes to the number of people getting enough physical activity. Almost a third of Australians aren’t getting enough exercise, according to new research by the World Health Organisation.

The research also found that females in Australia are doing less physical activity than males, with 33.6 percent of women not getting enough exercise compared to 27 percent of men. Overall, the figures put Australia behind the global average of 27.5 percent of people doing an insufficient amount of activity.

The drop in physical activity is partly due to inaction during leisure time and sedentary behaviour on the job and at home. Likewise, an increase in the use of “passive” modes of transportation also contributes to insufficient physical activity.

More than 70 per cent of people who work out at home claim that overall health and wellbeing was the leading motivating factor to exercise.20 per cent of men exercise for more than 60 minutes. 11 per cent of women train for more than 60 minutes.

How much physical activity is enough?

For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends these exercise guidelines: Aerobic activity. Get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week, or a combination of moderate and vigorous activity.
