Malaria tends to be absent from towns and cities. However, there is a risk of malaria in rural areas and undeveloped areas of the interior. Some areas of Sabah and Sarawak that are near the Indonesian border also have a higher risk of malaria. For a short stay (1-3 weeks) it should be no problem to take malaria pills.
