Both Bonaire and Klein Bonaire are surrounded by continuous, fringing coral reefs that cover an area of some 8.7 km2 (Debrot et al., in press). In many places, the reef starts right at the shoreline and extends seaward into depths in excess of 70 m within 200 m of the shore.
