In Thai, Thep (from Thewa from Deva) is a lesser and subordinate deity, distinct from “God” whom they call “Prah Jao” roughly translated as “Holy Lord”. Hence the typical translation of “angel”. The (first part of the) Thai name for Bangkok is GrungThep, which basically translates as “City of Devas”.
