Are chickadees in Maine?

The chickadee was designated as the state bird in 1927, but there are two types of chickadees found in Maine. The boreal chickadee is native to northern Maine, and the black-capped chickadee is native to southern Maine. State Rep. Betty Austin has submitted a bill to settle which is the official bird once and for all.

What does a Maine chickadee look like?

The Chickadee’s glossy head is large with a short neck and dark brown eyes. Its body is thick. The feathers are blended and short. The tail is long, arched, and rounded, with twelve slender feathers.

Where can chickadees be found?

Black-capped chickadees are found in deciduous and mixed deciduous-evergreen forests, especially near forest edges. They are commonly found near willows and cottonwoods, and like to make their nests in the snags of alder and birch trees. Feeders and nest boxes can be used to attract chickadees to suburban backyards.

Why is the chickadee the state bird of Maine?

As it turns out, when Maine’s legislators chose the bird to represent us, they weren’t overly concerned with specificity. They chose simply to designate “the chickadee” as Maine’s State Bird… despite the fact that two species of chickadee — the Black-capped and the Boreal — can be found in Maine.
