Is it safe to wash dishes with tap water in Mexico?

No need to use bottled water. We have done many trips all over Mexico and just use dish detergent in the tap water for wash and then put them in pan of tap water with several drops of “Microdyne”, an iodine-like disinfectant.

Can you wash dishes with tap water in Mexico?

It’s not only tourists who drink bottled water, locals do too. But washing dishes is not a problem at all. Just wash them in hot water and use them normally.

Can you filter tap water in Mexico?

To be on the safe side it’s always a good idea to use a high quality water filter in Mexico. The type of filter needed depends on the source of the water. For all public tap water a quality carbon block faucet filter is typically the most practical and affordable.

Why is the tap water in Mexico so bad?

So why can’t you drink the tap water in Mexico? Problems arise during the water’s journey from the source to your tap. The water can flow through old pipes or sit in holding tanks where heavy metals, bacteria, parasites, viruses, and other various debris can contaminate the water.

The tap water in Mexico will most certainly be safe by local health and safety standards, but won’t necessarily agree with your stomach. As such it’s much better to just stick to bottled water, and it’s definitely important that you drink more water than you usually would.

  • Never eat food that has not been cooked thoroughly.

The short answer is that anyone visiting Cancun on vacation is best advised to drink bottled water. Regardless of whether the tap water meets the standards of safety needed to be safe for drinking, a change in water from what you are used to can cause an upset stomachs. So, bottled water is the safest bet.
