How does El Nino affect Mozambique?

December 14, 2021 by Shelia Campbell

In 2016 one of the strongest El Niño events witnessed in the past 50 years struck. Mozambique, like many other countries in southern Africa was not spared. Thousands of farmers were left destitute as they helplessly watched their livestock die and crops fail as a severe drought raged on.

What causes drought in Mozambique?

Mozambique is one of the African countries most exposed to climate risks, ranging from floods and intense tropical cyclones to droughts. Both countries had socio-economic downturns in 2019 and 2020 and, like Mozambique and Madagascar, were hit in 2019 by the tropical cyclones Idai and Kenneth.

What does El Niño do to Africa?

In Africa, El Niño conditions are associated with increased rainfall in East Africa and decreased rainfall in southern Africa, West Africa, and parts of the Sahel.

How does El Niño affect Madagascar?

In 2017, the El Niño phenomenon peaked during a critical time in the agricultural calendar of southern Madagascar, causing drought and failed harvests. An average of 1.5 cyclones affect Madagascar yearly, the highest number in Africa, and each strong cyclone on average affects 700,000 people.

How does El Niño affect crops?

During El Niño Years
Harvests of summer crops such as corn, peanuts, and cotton may be delayed because of increased rains in the fall. Frequent rains may reduce tilling and yield of winter wheat. Wheat yields in southern AL and GA are generally higher than average during El Niño.

How does climate affect Mozambique?

The public health effects of climate change are related to rising temperatures, severe water shortages and extreme events such as frequent and severe droughts, floods and cyclones. In Mozambique, floods and cyclones usually have a negative impact on the already weak health system.

Why is Mozambique affected by climate change?

Despite contributing relatively few pollutants, Mozambique is considered among Africa’s most vulnerable nations to climate change. That’s because of its long Indian Ocean coastline and its location downstream of nine major river basins. Droughts in the country are also a threat.

How does El Niño affect East Africa?

To date, it has already affected climate in many parts of Asia and in the Northern parts of East Africa, causing serious rainfall deficits. In East Africa, for the bimodal areas, El Niño events in the second half of the year usually lead to wetter than average conditions and are generally beneficial for agriculture.

How does El Niño affect South Africa?

How does this affect SA? “It causes below normal rainfall in summer rainfall areas and higher than normal temperatures from December to February,” explained Engelbrecht. This is because sea temperatures rise, which makes the air more dry and humid, influencing hotter weather patterns.

How does El Niño affect Africa’s economy?

El Nino Impacts (2015/16 Season)
– Reduced crop yields – Cattle deaths – Low dam levels due to less inflows – Sectors affected include food security, livelihoods, agriculture, livestock, nutrition, health and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH).

What are 3 effects of El Niño?

Severe drought and associated food insecurity, flooding, rains, and temperature rises due to El Niño are causing a wide range of health problems, including disease outbreaks, malnutrition, heat stress and respiratory diseases.

How does El Niño affect the environment in Africa?

El Niño is commonly linked to droughts in southern Africa and extreme rainfall in eastern Africa.Drought and flooding in sub-Saharan Africa are often considered most closely in relation to risks to agriculture. But increasing urbanisation is changing the nature of climate risk in the region.

How does El Niño affect agricultural production?

ENSO affects crop production because it disrupts normal weather patterns. More specifically, El Niño creates water shortages and La Niña creates water abundance, including flooding. Water shortages reduce crop planting areas, delay planting seasons, and generally lower crop yields.

How does El Niño affect wildlife?

An El Niño reduces the upwelling of cold water off the coast of the Americas. When this happens, fish either die or migrate into areas where they’ll find more to eat. With the fish gone, sea birds that depend on them may die or go elsewhere. Kelp forests are often destroyed by storms and ocean swells.

How does El Niño affect the environment?

El Niño causes the Pacific jet stream to move south and spread further east. During winter, this leads to wetter conditions than usual in the Southern U.S. and warmer and drier conditions in the North. El Niño also has a strong effect on marine life off the Pacific coast.

What are the negative effects of El Niño on agricultural production?

The drought conditions due to El Niño have a direct negative impact on maize production and long term crop production statistics analysis carried out by WFP show that drops in maize yield are clearly more frequent during El Niño seasons particularly for South Africa (largest producer) and Zimbabwe (most food insecure).

Why is Mozambique vulnerable to tropical cyclones?

Extremely susceptible to climate shocks, Mozambique has been facing cyclical droughts and flooding over the last years, including two major cyclones in 2019, which compounds the high poverty levels and increase vulnerability across most of the country.

Which 3 other countries were affected by Eloise?

Teams were sent out to assess the damage and repair it. There have been 27 confirmed deaths, with one in Madagascar, 11 in Mozambique, three in Zimbabwe, 10 in South Africa, and two in Eswatini.

What are the impact of tropical cyclone in Mozambique?

The cyclone caused severe flooding in the same areas that were just recovering from two similar cyclones in 2019 – Idai and Kenneth – and by tropical storm cyclone Chalane on 30 December 2020. The areas were already experiencing significant flooding as a result of heavy rainfall since 15 January 2021.

Which 3 countries were affected by Eloise?

After making landfall in Mozambique, Eloise continued across southern Africa, though in a weakened state. The storm caused damage and flooding to South Africa, Eswatini, and Zimbabwe.

How does El Niño affect South America?

During an El Niño event, the surface of the tropical Pacific Ocean gets warmer than usual, particularly at the equator and along the coasts of South and Central America. Warm oceans lead to low pressure systems in the atmosphere above, which in turn leads to a lot of rain for the western coasts of the Americas.
