Is it safe to eat clams from Long Island Sound?

Long Island clams are wild clams harvested by clam diggers in Long Island Sound and our south shore bays. Our local shellfish industry is highly regulated and monitored by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to ensure the clams are 100 percent safe to eat.

Is it safe to eat shellfish from Long Island Sound?

A variety of shellfish are commercially and recreationally harvested each year from Long Island Sound for human consumption.Shellfish beds are regularly monitored by state regulatory agencies to assure that shellfish harvested in commercial and recreationally approved areas are safe to eat.

Can I eat oysters from Long Island Sound?

Beneath the briny waters along the rocky coast and sandy shoals of Long Island Sound, you will find a thriving oyster industry. Whether roasted over a fire, served raw on the half shell or rendered as Rockefellers, oysters have been a part of the region’s cuisine for generations.

Can you go clamming in Long Island?

There are no temporary shellfish closures in effect at this time. New York State has a wide variety of shellfish available for harvest, including hard clams or quahogs, blue mussels, razor clams, soft clams, oysters and bay scallops.

Where can I dig for clams?

How to Find Clams. Start by looking in bays and estuaries that get plenty of tidal flow. Clams live in a variety of conditions, including sand, mud, and even rocky areas, though I favor locations that feature more of a muddy/sandy bottom. Drive around to likely areas at low tide and seek out other clammers.

Are mussels from Long Island Sound safe to eat?

They are good for the restaurants, though, since they deliver a reliable, clean product. If you get your hands on some local mussels, rinse them under running water and pull off the stringy beards. I don’t bother to scrub them unless they are really muddy and dirty.

Are there starfish in the Long Island Sound?

Horseshoe crabs, spider crabs and starfish are some of the few animals I encountered on the muddy bottom. The water around Huckleberry Island a mile or so off shore New Rochelle and the Bronx, is home to many species of fish, crustaceans, cnidarians, mollusks, sponges and echinoderms.

Can you eat striped bass from the Long Island Sound?

Most saltwater fish from Long Island Sound are safe to eat, except striped bass and large bluefish. When possible, eat smaller fish such as panfish (yellow perch, white suckers, sunfish). Certain fish in Connecticut rivers, lakes and Long Island Sound contain mercury, PCBs or chlordane.

Where can I catch clams in South Jersey?

The most common areas to clam locally are the sandbars near the Fish Factory islands on the Great Bay side and the sandbars in and around the islands on the Little Egg Harbor side. You can also clam in the LBI (Long Beach Island) ocean front surf. DO NOT forget to have your license with you!
