The state’s bear population once lived largely in the Adirondacks and Catskills, but have now spread to nearly every part of the state except Long Island and New York City.

Were there bears on Long Island?

No, not in recent history at least. And if it were possible, I don’t see where they could settle without human contact. Black bears can be found in surrounding areas like upstate New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, or Connecticut, but certainly not Long Island.
