The Foreign Office (FCO) warns that seas around the Maldives “can have strong tidal currents” and that a number of foreign nationals drown each year, adding that visitors should always take local advice before entering the water.

There’s no need to worry: I’ve never even heard of anyone being stung by a sting ray in the Maldives and there’s no need to do a ‘shuffle walk’. While there are sting rays in the sand and they can come close to the beach, they’re already well aware of anyone in the water and will move away.
